The Pain Management Approach

The Pain Management approach I offer is evidence-based and it will help you to learn effective ways to manage your symptoms and gain again control over your life. You will also gain a better understanding of your "own physiology", body signals and psychological responses, and from that increased awareness, you will learn how to take care of those responses in a totally new and refreshing way. 

Throughout our work, I will guide you to look at your pain experience from a mind-body lens, taking into account your body, mind, your personal history, values and dreams.


The style of the sessions will be mostly experiential (through a mixture of bodywork, cognitive and behavioural exercises that I like to call “little experiments”) and tailored to your personal needs and goals.


During the sessions, I will guide you towards:

  • Understanding what persistent pain is and the physiological link between pain and stress 

  • Self-management skills (e.g. learn to observe your body signals, self-regulation techniques, activity pacing)

  • Approaching to your body and painful body parts in a more gentle way

  • Simple movements and exercises to gain strength and flexibility (if needed)

  • Re-focussing and working towards your values, personal goals and activities that matter to you

  • Managing barriers that may occur along the way (physical, psychological and social)


Sometimes persistent pain and fatigue can manifest alongside other difficulties that can get in the way of living a full and meaningful life. In case you might be struggling with other issues like anxiety, depression or other psychological issues or you may want some psychological support during your Pain Management journey, we are able to offer Multidisciplinary Packages where Specialist Physiotherapy sessions will be delivered alongside Specialist Psychology sessions (for more information, please click on the Services button - Multidisciplinary Packages).

The ACT Model

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT is a behavioral model used in many Pain Management programmes in the UK. The aim of ACT is to increase one’s ability for mindful, values-guided action, to maximize their potential for a rich and meaningful life while handling the pain that inevitably comes with it.  Rather than focussing on symptoms reduction (which often can be a difficult fight, leading to more frustration and increased symptoms), ACT helps clarify our values and use it as a guide to inspire us to do things that matter to us. ACT teaches mindfulness techniques to handle difficult personal internal experiences (e.g. thoughts and feelings, self-critique) and develop self-compassion and flexibility while engaging in meaningful activities. From my clinical experience I have learned that the ACT model works really well with people experiencing persistent pain and fatigue.

Am I suitable for this approach?

If you are experiencing long-term pain and/or chronic fatigue that is affecting your ability to have a full life, you might find this approach helpful. Our work will aim to ease your symptoms and improve your quality of life by gaining more sense of control on what you can do to manage your pain, modifying your response to pain, approaching movements or activities in a more flexible way, getting to know your body's needs and getting back to what you love doing.

  • Neuropathic pain

  • Persistent post-surgical pain

  • Persistent post-traumatic pain

  • Visceral pain

  • Any persistent musculoskeletal pain including non-specific low back pain and neck pain


Equally, if you experience high levels of stress that give you body-related symptoms such as muscle tension, constant tiredness or difficulty with sleep this approach may be suitable too.
